AI research from your private bank: seven questions to ask before you trust it
More private banks and family offices are adding AI research for their clients. Seven plain questions tell you whether a tool works for you.
Short answer
Before you rely on AI research from your private bank or family office, ask seven things: is it about your own holdings, does every figure show its source, what does it do when it cannot find one, are facts kept apart from opinions, whose opinion are you reading, can it move money, and does your banker see what you see. A good tool answers each one plainly.
Why these questions matter now
Wealthy clients say the experience often falls short. Only 17% of high-net-worth individuals describe their advisory experience as seamless and personalised, and 42% have to restate their goals and preferences several times to the same firm. AI research promises to close that gap. Whether it does depends on a few choices you can check in one conversation.

1. Is it about my holdings, or about the market?
Market commentary is easy to produce. Useful research starts from what you own and the goals you set, and says what today's movement means for them. Ask to see today's note for your own portfolio, not the market in general.
2. Can I see where every number came from?
Ask to open any figure and see its source and the time it was taken. A number you cannot trace is an opinion, however precise it looks.
3. What does it do when it cannot find a source?
The safe answer is that it leaves the figure out and tells you so. A tool that fills the gap with a likely-looking guess is the one to worry about.
4. Are facts kept apart from opinions?
What happened and what someone thinks will happen are different things. A good page shows them separately, so you can weigh the forecast without doubting the facts.
5. Whose opinion am I reading?
Your bank has a view, and your banker may have another. An independent second view helps only if it is labelled as one. Ask whether each opinion says who holds it, and whether you see both views when they disagree.
6. Can it place orders or move money?
Research should inform your decisions, not make them. Ask whether the tool can trade, move money or connect to a broker. For a research tool the right answer is no: decisions, and any advice about them, stay with you and your licensed adviser.
7. Does my banker see what I see?
Daily research is worth most when it leads to a better conversation. When you raise a question, your banker should receive it with the analysis and its sources, so the call starts from the facts.
And one more: where does my information stay?
Ask whether the tool runs inside your bank's or family office's own systems, under its own approval, and who else can see the questions you ask.
The short version to take to your banker
- Is it about my holdings and goals?
- Can I open the source of every figure?
- What happens when a source is missing?
- Are facts shown apart from opinions?
- Does each opinion say whose it is?
- Can it trade or move money?
- Does my banker see my question, with its sources?
The best answer to each question is a plain one.

Quick questions
What should I ask my private bank about AI research?
Ask whether it is about your own holdings, whether every figure shows its source, what it does when a source is missing, whether facts are kept apart from opinions, whose opinion you are reading, whether it can move money, and whether your banker sees what you see.
Is AI research from my bank investment advice?
Usually not. Research and decision-support tools inform your decisions; personalised advice comes from your licensed adviser. Ask your bank which one a tool is.
